Avoid duplicate Material

Don't know how informative it would sound and you seem to know already but for the sake of stating it separately, whenever you change some property of a material, its copy is made and changes are made on that copy and applied to a renderer. So 10 objects using same material but different texture alphas, for example, means 10 copies of the original material.
